In 1967, nestled in the middle of the Emerald Estates Subdivision, Canby Lane Elementary opened its doors. To ensure meeting the needs of the total child, the Canby Lane staff, from the beginning, strived to ensure that children are presented with the most current information through the use of instructional guides for core curricula and supplemental programs. The staff also provides programs to meet the needs of exceptional children and students from diverse backgrounds. Providing varied and challenging programs, the school provides learning that allows students to develop academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. In 1994, Dekalb County Schools added a new wing to the existing building that included more classrooms and a music room. More recently, a physical education facility was added in 1999.
The mission of Canby Lane Elementary School is to provide students with a solid educational foundation upon which they can build a future as productive and responsible citizens in the global community.
We believe that a core fundamental principle that fosters life-long learning is through collaboration. To this end, Canby Lane Administrators, Teachers, Support Staff, Parents, Students, and Representatives from the community wholeheartedly believe and are committed to the following:
· Student achievement as the priority.
· Remembering that each student is a valued individual with unique intellectual, physical, social, and emotional needs.
· Providing a variety of instructional methods that support the learning styles of all students.
· To strive for improvement through continuous change.
· Build and maintain a technological infrastructure that fosters collaboration and 21st century learning.
Children are able to extend their school day by enrolling in the afternoon tutorial program. This program is also offered during the summer months to further extend learning. Canby Lane also has a site-based instructional program for high achievers, which is offered to qualified second through fifth grade students. It offers a comprehensive, highly enriched academic program that allows students to develop to their fullest potential. All children have access to the computer lab which includes workstations for an entire class. Additionally, computer workstations are found in each classroom.
